About us - Our Beginnings
The origin story of Dydx dates back to 2006, when our founder Kyle was in primary school. It was during this time that he learned to code (in Visual Basic 6) from borrowed Year 12 ICT textbooks. It was also during this time that he taught himself how to calculate the "derivative of Y with respect to X" for a video game he was writing in Game Maker 6 - many years before he would learn what calculus was.
It was the profound excitement of intuitively discovering that (𝑥₂ - 𝑥₁) / (𝑦₂ - 𝑦₁) could be used to help orient a player object to face its intended goal (e.g. the mouse cursor)... this first encounter with practical math, that stuck with him for many years.
Later, during university, he remembered this key moment and its feeling of accomplishment - thus naming the company "Dydx".
The slogan: "Technical solutions with a positive difference", was also inspired by the equation (𝑦 = |𝑚𝑥| + 𝑐), because the gradient 𝑚 will always tend in the positive direction.

Dydx has existed in many different forms over the years, continually growing and deepening its capabilities with every new problem solved.

- Started as a General IT Services & PC Repair company (Microsoft Servers & Hardware Support)

- Progressed onto internal software portals for Small-Medium Businesses (PHP, Rails)
- Developed capabilities in Desktop & Mobile Application Development (iOS, Android)
- Expanded to offer bespoke Software Development & advisory services for Startups & Scale-ups
- Deepened our strategic & advisory services for Enterprise
- Refocused on our original mission... to enable Innovation!
