Innovation - Why Innovate?

Through our lived experience, we've learned that our highest value as humans is to be creative, innovative, empathetic and to connect the unseen dots.

In a world where AI is sold as a 'silver-bullet' for all problems, where thinking is outsourced, we choose to focus on what makes humans brilliant - our thirst for knowledge, ingenuity and abstract thinking.

Philosophically, we believe that innovation is the pinnacle of the human spirit and the fire of humanity that should be protected and nurtured at all costs.

Tenets for Innovation:

  • Fundamentally, we don't believe problems are 'hard'. With sufficient time, effort and resources, almost anything is possible.
  • "If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail". Modern technical education teaches us to see everything as a nail. We need to undo this self-limiting mindset.
  • Complexity /= Difficulty
  • Innovation by definition requires you to do something that has never been done before, therefore you cannot 'prepare' for it, other than by gaining a deep understanding of the fundamentals.
  • Multi-domain understanding blended with innovative thinking is what leads to impactful solutions.
  • Innovation cannot happen in a vacuum. People need other people and productive background stimuli.

Dydx Labs

Dydx Labs is the innovation focused arm of Dydx.   It exists as a mechanism to find, support and nurture the flame of human technical excellence.

1. Deterministic AI workflows without the use of LLM's:

  • A combination of Symbolic AI, Logic Programming, NLP and other domain specific fine-tuned SLM's.
  • Centralised AI service mesh for organisation wide provisioning, governance and control.

2. Federated & Unified Compute Clusters:

  • Streamlined orchestration for HTC & HPC workloads across heterogeneous compute nodes.
  • Federated Compute Clusters (eg. multi-organization, multi-campus compute pools).
  • Unified Compute (eg. Combine multiple separate nodes into a single large compute node).

3. Better application sandboxes:

  • More robust, transparent and user-friendly sand-boxing for trusted & untrusted software (specifically to protect host machines from modern software supply chain risks associated with AI generated code and agentic tooling).  (VibeJail)

4. New methods for proactive Cyber Defence:

  • Safer containerisation and policy enforcement through custom user-space Linux kernels and the interception of malicious syscalls.  (Nqaba)

5. Ultra-low latency remote desktops:

( Remote Workstations )

  • Utilisation of modern transmission protocols to enable real-time remote desktop access, enabling GPU intensive workloads at resolutions of up to 4k on high latency internet connections.

6. Simplified real-time video transmission:

  • Development of custom hardware and software encoders for live-streaming and sporting events (eg. Better consumer & budget friendly signal bonding and link aggregation).
